Environmentally Friendly Promotions:
How, Why, What's Available

By Jack Malki

The concept of environmental responsibility, once dismissed by many as an unnecessary burden, is taking hold. Many individuals and industries are making positive changes in this regard, and that includes the promotional products industry.

Almost every month I receive a new announcement from one of our factories alerting me to new environmentally friendly (i.e. "green") products. What's more, these "green" product introductions are coming at an accelerating rate as demand grows.

Why consider "green" promotional products?

I can think of three good reasons:

1) Many consumers are health conscious and environmentally aware, and many more are joining their ranks. These consumers will tend to appreciate your using "green" products in your promotions.

2) If you are in an industry which deals with the environment or in an industry which suffers from a poor environmental image, selecting environmentally responsible products may benefit your promotions.

3) Using "green" products lessens oil dependence - since most plastics are made from oil - and contributes to a healthier environment for everyone, as the usage of pesticides, herbicides and the discharge of pollutants is lessened.

Types of environmentally friendly promotional products:

1) Products made from organically grown plants. These include tote bags, t-shirts and other cloth products made from organically grown cotton, hemp, burlap and jute.

2) Products made from renewable resources. For example, some very nice garments today are being made from micro modal, a natural fiber derived from wood pulp. Corn resin and sugarcane pulp are now being used in place of some traditional plastics. And many promotional products are made from new-growth natural wood.

3) Many promotional products today are being made from post-consumer and post-industrial waste. For example, polyethylene plastics (such as plastic milk jugs and laundry bottles) and polystyrene (such as plastic plates, Styrofoam cups and egg cartons) cardboards and newspapers are being recycled into promotional pens, clipboards, cups, yo-yos, key tags, rulers and dozens of other promotional items.

4) Some promotional products are natural to begin with. For example, flower and vegetable seeds, packed in custom-logo'd packets, are popular promotional products. Tree seedlings, house/office plants and mini-gardens that grow in a bag are among the other all-natural promotional products available for your promotions.
